I personally have found that home day care providers are easier to work with because of drop-ins and can be more accepting of difficult children. I found a lady not far from my house that I used. I could call her with a week’s notice or the day I needed care with multiple special needs children. Even if I needed overnight care she worked with me. A great bonus for me was that she could watch my own children for me so I didn’t have to split up my foster kids and my children up. I also had my sister go through some classes and the background checks so she could help me out when I was in a pinch or had an emergency. She has been a great asset and very helpful to the family and my foster children. I also had a couple of family members and friends do the background check so I always had options in case of emergency. I’m careful about not leaving my truly difficult and problematic children with family and friends that may not be able to deal with their problems or behaviors.

This is the part that really may ruffle some peoples feathers. Sadly to say I feel it is misused along with the number foster parents. I do not feel that respite care is for or should be used for when a foster parent does not want a foster child in their home due to the holidays, your children’s birthdays or when you go on family outings. I know this can be a touchy issue with some so let me explain my thoughts.
