Having an exchange student in my home has given me another perspective on life. Things in America are definitely different from in other countries. The things that we take for granted are not often not true in other parts of the world. One of the biggest differences is the Foster Care System. Those of you involved know that a lot of legalities go into the protection of children- sometimes it can feel as though there are too many hoops to jump through.
If a child falls into an unsafe situation in America, the foster care system gets involved and tries to do what is best for the family. I know that this does not always seem to occur but it is the stated goal. In other many other countries, if a child ends up in an unsafe situation- there is no help for them. They must care for themselves and often younger family members. Their survival depends on their own compensation ability and sheer luck.
It is difficult to hear about the many children that are literally ‘thrown away’ in these countries. Perhaps they have a defect- a missing finger or ear. Or they were born the wrong gender. I have met some of these children and they are perfect. It is unfathomable to me that there is nothing in place for their care and protection. I know that I could not understand because I have grown up in a world that we take care of each other. The handicap are not shut away or killed. Children are supported in their times of need and families make room in their hearts and homes.
If you are involved in fostering, I know that it is tough. There is nothing natural about the situation and its requirements. Yet, I know that you are part of something bigger. There is a certain kind of compassion that is a must to be walking where you are. Hang in there. The children that you are investing in are worth every second.
As you look at the circumstances the children under your care come from, you have to know that every ounce of energy and time invested is making a difference. The number of children who make it out of unsafe situations without someone helping them to carry their load is slim. We are blessed that we can be part of something so big and important- saving the lives of children.
