This can provide foster children with so much information about their lives while in foster care. I do not think a lot of people think about how important this is for the children that come into our lives. Sometimes these children are with us a few days, months or even years. While they are with a foster family, they are making memories. Mile stones are happening, and lives are going on. Even if they are older, children they may forget when something happened or where they were living when it took place.

You have to remember a large number of foster children will have multiple foster family placements. Sometimes two or three a year, so you can imagine how events can become lost to the foster children. I had two little boys that I was their sixth foster placement (the youngest was three years old and spent his entire life in foster care). They came with two pictures, one was a caseworker with the boys and the other was one of the boys with a lady (nobody could tell me who the lady was or when it was taken). This little three year old boy lost his first three years to the foster care system without any memories or reminders.

Life or memory books allow foster children not to lose their past and memories. They have already lost so much, and this is something they do not have to lose.

The life books will be about the foster child his or her life including foster families. This is something that a foster child can take with him or her to different foster placements and when he or she returns home or when adoption recurs.

The book will cover school information, extra curricular happenings, friends, foster parents, foster siblings, health records, all the first….. and other events. There will or should be places for pictures and other keepsakes.
