As a person who has experienced foster care systems first hand, I can tell you that being in that system for me was much better than the alternative of staying at homewith my sexually abusive father that was an alcoholic, and my mother was hooked on drugs. For me, the foster care system I was in saved my life. It was because of it that I got the second chance in life that I have now. I do agree that the system needs reform, and that in no way is it perfect, but I think it is a blessing in most cases. I can speak for myself, and for my 2 sister and 1 brother that were also in the system.

We are struggling between protecting the foster child or our own right now. His biomom is a drug addict and convicted of assault more than once and she and her boyfriend were lurking around our house this weekend. We want him safe but we want our family safe too. How far do you go to help these children when the system doesn't help you? While the FS slept soundly feeling safe, my own 13 year old was nervous and NOT feeling safe. He is having to be more aware of his suuroundings since I cannot be with him 24/7. I find this unacceptable.
