Do Foster Parents Have To Give Up Their Vacations? Part 2

I do not advise this because it causes the caseworker problems which means it can come back to bite you on the back side. Things happen sometimes without notice, so you have to roll with the punches (so to speak).

I now live close to the state line, so we do a lot of shopping by crossing the state line. I had to talk with my caseworker about this and then they got special permission from the judge for us to go across state lines on day trips. If we want to stay the night across state lines we have to get special permission from the caseworker and judge. So, even taking your foster children on vacations in another state is an option.

Now taking foster children out of the country is another whole deal. My agency says under no circumstances, which I understand is the view on most. I have heard that some states or agencies do allow it but this is something you need to discuss with your caseworker. I would most definitely allow several months to jump through the hoops that await you. If you need someone to go with you, I will check my schedule (grin, ha ha):)

I always do all of my requests by email. This way I always have a hard copy of what is said. I feel better having permission in writing, kind of an insurance policy in case something should happen. You have to protect yourself because no one will.

When you make you request or ask permission, allow at least two to three weeks and provide as much information as possible. If you do not hear from the caseworker touch base after a week, to check to see if they received your email.
