I’ve been doing foster care for teens for seven years. How about:

Demonstrate that you are willing to sit and listen when they are upset, even when they are upset at you.

Don’t take what the say personally, let it roll off. Don’t escalate.

Don’t try to force emotional bonds. Let them take their time and come to you.
