Delaware Toddler Abandoned in Parking Lot

Parent pushing the “safe haven” law envelope by leaving a toddler believed to be between 12 to 18 months old in a hospital parking lot. The Delaware “safe haven” law allows a parent to relinquish a newborn (no more than 14 days old) at an emergency room and giving the child directly to a hospital employee.

This little boy was dressed in clean clothing, sitting on a parking lot curb, and crying when a nurse returning from lunch discovered the abandoned boy. The boy was comforted by the nurse until she gave him to the hospital security.

A note was found on the toddler by the state police. Details of the note and the location it was found has not been released since this information would only be known by the toddler’s parents. The state police are searching for the parents of the toddler and asking the public to assist.

The toddler has been placed in foster care waiting to see what will happen in the police investigation.

The outcome for this toddler could have been so different with being left in a busy parking lot. Another scary thought is that there are a lot of people in this world looking for children to harm.

The truth is that children are abandoned by their biological parents every year without a thought to their safety or well being. The horrible thing is that the biological parents still maintain their parental rights and could get their children back.

The totally crazy thing is that you cannot take an animal to the Humane Society to surrend it and then come back a few days later saying I changed my mind. Strange how we protect pets more than we do the children. Heck, the Humane Society can even take you to court and say you cannot have any more animals. With children we send them back to parents that have said and shown they could care less about caring for their children. This attitude could lead to neglect, abuse, and abandonment again. This would lead to spending a childhood in and out of foster care, or worse dead. What are we thinking????

This is why I quit being a foster parent for DFCS and started being a foster home for our county Humane Society. I had three foster children. A baby boy whose mother broke his arm at 3 weeks old - she got him back and broke his hip at 6 months old. Finally freed for adoption at 3 years old after two surgeries to repair hip. A girl abandoned at 3 months but left in foster limbo because mom would not do enough to get her back or sign papers to release her for adoption. Finally returned to mom at age 12 - raped by mom's live-in boyfriend and was back in foster care with her own baby at 14. Last was a baby boy whose mom wanted adoption plan but dad (age 16) wanted baby. He got baby and GAVE HIM AS A WEDDING GIFT TO HIS OLDER SISTER (age 20). They left the state and I lost track of him.
After that I foster over 200 dogs for the Humane Society and never once did we return one to a abusive or neglectful owner. I could sleep at night and not worry about what was happening to the dogs!

Being a parent is NOT a right, it's a PRIVILEGE. People forget that, or chose to ignore it.

I'm with you, Deb. Too bad there are no laws to enforce that.

There should be!
Is there a way to push for it?
There has to be a way to challenge these myths and CHANGE them.
