AmeriCorps Foster Youth Mentoring Project FYMP

Approximately 4,000 foster youth annually emancipate from California’s foster care system at age 18. Many of these foster youth lack the necessary life skills and adult support they need for successfully transitioning to independent living. As a group, emancipated foster youth experience disproportionate rates of homelessness, high school non-completion, early-on welfare dependency, employment instability, incarceration, early pregnancy, mental health problems, and alcohol and drug abuse. In response to this crisis the Foundation for California Community Colleges has developed the Foster Youth Mentoring Project (FYMP).

Project Goals
The AmeriCorps FYMP seeks to:

Assist at least 340 current and recently emancipated foster youth ages 14-21 in developing independent living skills and providing them the adult support they need to emancipate from foster care and successfully live on their own.
Provide foster youth mentoring opportunities to 340 Community College students at 11 Community Colleges as a prelude to a career in social services and as an opportunity to serve their community.
Provide 22 Career Development Fairs to engage over 500 foster youth in career development and job searching skills.
Build the capacity of local communities to address the needs of foster youth by engaging 340 non-AmeriCorps volunteers to support the implementation of Foster Youth Career Development Fairs and to assist community and faith-based organizations in addressing various unmet needs by participating in short-term community service projects with mentors and foster youth

The following schools participate:
