Do all biological parents deserve second chances? Truthfully some biological parents get numerous chances. Are the children getting a second chance and at what price?
Some children cycle in and out of the foster care system time and time again for the benefit of second, third, fourth, fifth…….chances for the biological parents. The damage of this to these children cannot be undone and the effects last a lifetime.
A
15 month old toddler girl was placed into foster care after suffering a skull fracture while in the father’s care. First the story was the toddler fell out of bed and when the story did not match the toddler’s injury. Then the father stated he had the baby sitting on his shoulders and ran downstairs where the infant hit her head on the stair overhang then she fell.
The infant was returned to the biological parents after the second explanation of the father seemed to be plausible with the infant’s injuries. Two weeks after the infant was returned to her biological parents the father was left alone with the 15 month old infant. He became upset with the baby because she was crying and threw her into the bed. He picked her up and told her to get her bottle. He then started striking her while she continued to cry.

He was holding the infant while running water for a bath when the mother returned home from the grocery store. She noticed the baby was vomiting and having trouble breathing and stated they should call 911. The father stated that the infant had fallen off the bed (again). Destiny died two weeks after her biological parents received a second chance.
For this former foster child her parents’ second chance came at the cost of her life. This children was first removed mid December placed into foster care and on January 31 she was returned home. Is a month and a half enough time to evaluate the risk of harm the child may be in before sending them back to the home? When is a lie a lie and when does it become plausible truth?
