A number of states are looking at, or have gone to private foster care as one part to reform the foster care system. Some states have been going back and forth on what would be best. Some people view this as a way out for the state instead of fixing the problems they just pass the responsibility to someone else.

An 8 month old boy and his 1 year old sister have been placed in foster care in Richland Hills, Texas. These two children’s lives have changed due to their family’s involvement in drugs.
The two children were living with the grandmother and mother(she is expecting another baby any day) before being placed into foster care. The grandmother was caring for the 8 month old boy and while in her care, he “accidentally” ingested drugs. The mother returned home and noticed something was wrong with the boy and took him the emergency room, where he was later transferred to a local children’s hospital.

Foster children that are illegal immigrants are leaving the system without checking into the possibility of receiving their green cards. Then they become adults with a limited future. By not having legal status they will face problems with education, employment concerns, along with being deported.
Some neglected, abandoned and abused foster children are eligible for legal residency under federal law. They have to be dependents of the state, under the age of 21 and unmarried. Should adoption only be an option for children that have suffered abuse? What about the thousands of children in foster care and worldwide that suffer neglect? What should their fate be? A father of an 11 month old boy that was abandoned earlier this month in a hospital parking lot in Delaware is facing charges on child endangerment and abandonment. The police are also looking into the disappearance for the toddler’s mother last seen June 7 with her son and boyfriend. A new state reports that the state is still failing the children in foster care. There are a few areas that they have talked about changing things. Some totally make sense and should have happened long ago, while other changes could be a step back instead of improving.

California is in the process of trying to help the foster children that are aging out of the system by passing AB 845 which will offer transitional housing to the foster children along job training, financial planning, education needs and other resources.
Some senators are threatening to block this, and it is believed that it may fall short of two-thirds majority votes. A foster mom was the only mother a 10 year old boy has known for 8 years of his life. Then in a flash she is no longer is mother. The foster child was raised with the foster mom’s son that he new as a brother. With the tap of the judge’s gavel the life this child knew ended.
