House Bill 1006 has passed in Colorado that will help foster children that have siblings in different foster homes and also when a sibling ages out of foster care. It is not uncommon for foster children to be separated in foster care. In some areas, foster siblings can find themselves separated by a number of miles making visits difficult and more likely not to happen.

In these situations, siblings are the only family that these foster children may have. A lot... more

We have to stop looking at family reunification and kinship placements with starry eyes, and not evaluating placements before placing a foster child there. We are placing children right back in harm's way by preserving families at all cost. The cost is high. Foster children continue to be abused, and some will die when placed in kinship placements or family reunification.

These children are living in difficult, sometimes deadly situations on a daily basis. Thinking that all families can be one big happy family is a pie in the sky idea, and it is not pratical. We have to be realistic that family reunification will not be the answer for all families, or even a large part... more

A new state reports that the state is still failing the children in foster care. There are a few areas that they have talked about changing things. Some totally make sense and should have happened long ago, while other changes could be a step back instead of improving.

First major area of concern is the high caseloads, burnout and high turn over with their caseworkers. Caseworker caseload involves 20 to 30 cases per worker. I do believe the caseload is too high due to the amount of work involved with each child. I do know that other... more

Should the Foster Parents Identities Be Known to the Public?

Since foster parents can be viewed as employees of the state does the public (including the biological parents) have the right to our names, address and other information? This has been some of the talk since the problems with the Ohio foster care system. Does this open a whole new can of worms so to speak?

Some foster parents have done horrible things to the foster children in their care and some have even died, which should not happen. I cannot see how making foster parent's information public would be able to stop tragedies in foster care.

The truth is... more

More facts are coming to light to the missing toddler in Florida that was found in Wisconsin. One thing that was very interesting was that the “foster parent” was not a licensed foster parent. The toddler was placed with a friend of the mother so this would be kinship placement.

The friend providing care for the toddler says that the mother showed up and took the toddler without permission. She did not report the toddler missing or being taken for ten days to the caseworker. The toddler’s mother says that the friend... more

Foster children are being sent back to abusive homes every day. Some will live their entire childhood being abused while others end up dead. Is this protecting children? The truth is that people get so caught up with trying to save a family instead of saving the children. I am not saying that some families do not deserve the right to a reunified family, but not all. Do parents that continually abuse their children have the right to be parents with the right to continue the abuse?

Philadelphia, Child Welfare failed to protect a 9 month -old baby boy. This mother was no stranger to DHS, she had... more
